Tips for the Sedentary Worker

Sitting for more than 6 hours a day increases the likelihood of you dying 15 years earlier than someone who sits less than 3 hours. Now take into account that Americans spend on average 9.3 hours a day sitting. By the way, the negative impacts of sitting aren’t completely counteracted even if you work out 30 minutes/day.

Sitting. If you work in an office, you probably do a lot of it and after some prominent health studies hit the mainstream media in 2014, you probably already know that it is bad for your health. The studies mentioned in a Daily Mail article explain that the effects of prolonged sitting can happen quickly and exercise doesn’t completely reverse the negative impacts e.g. increased blood sugar.

But what can YOU do about this?

A sit-to-stand desk or adjustable-height desktop converter is a great place to start because you can alternate between sitting and standing. However, there are a few additional pointers that you should keep in mind even when you own a standing desk.

Posture, posture, posture. Being mindful of your posture is important when you are sitting down for long periods of time.

  • Avoid slouching and leaning forward while you are seated: Use the back of the chair as support. If you’re unable to do this, a pillow or lumbar support cushion can help facilitate it.
  • Keep your feet flat on the floor: This is a difficult habit for many to break but it puts less strain on your back in the long run.
  • Keep your elbows at a 90-degree angle: By positioning your elbows in this manner, you are less likely to experience pain in your wrists. Ergonomic keyboards are adjustable which make it much easier for your furniture to adapt to your needs.
  • Your eyes should be level with the center of your monitors: Adjustable monitor arms make it much easier to create an ergonomic setup and reduce strain on your upper vertebrae.
