Defining What Makes the Best Stand-Up Desk & How to Maximize It

Taking a Stand for Office Ergonomics

The office furniture piece known as a standing desk is an elevated tabletop work station. A standing desk serves many practical aspects of work. A computer workstation. A place to read and write. And a place to produce work in a standing, upright position. The elevated platform allows the user to stand up and conduct business in the office environment. A standing desk is widely considered to be the better ergonomic design then a stationary sitting desk.

In addition to a standing desk, there are elevated seating options like a high office chair and a tall stool that can allow the user to sit and stand at a standing table. Scientific research shows that using a standing desk can potentially benefit the users with better health.

Startups Companies Want to Establish a Sit-To-Stand Enviroment from the Start

Mobil Health News reported on how Seven startups that want to help employees sit less, stay active at work. Of particular interest was about Project Boundary. They wrote, "Project Boundary is a joint effort from The Department of Health and Human Service’s Idea Lab, the Office of the National Coordinator partnered, and company Total Communicator Solutions. The project aims to help employers engage their employees with proximity sensors and messages that are sent to the user’s smartphone. In its first demo, Project Boundary focused on helping employees increase the movement and physical activity they did every day. For example, when users approach the elevator, the beacon near the elevator will send a trigger to the user’s phone that suggests users take the stairs. After users get up the stairs, another beacon will trigger a message that offers the user a “mountaineer achievement” for choosing to climb them. After the team sets up Project Boundary in different workplaces, they will start to “nudge” the employees based on what the program learns about their habits. Eventually, Project Boundary also plans to incorporate competitions and other gaming components." Read more about the other startups HERE.

Calorie burner: How much better is standing up than sitting?

BBC News Magazine reported amazing statistics on the effects of standing up more. "If we look at the heart rates," John Buckley explains, "we can see they are quite a lot higher actually - on average around 10 beats per minute higher and that makes a difference of about 0.7 of a calorie per minute." Now that doesn't sound like much, but it adds up to about 50 calories an hour. If you stand for three hours a day for five days that's around 750 calories burnt. Over the course of a year it would add up to about 30,000 extra calories, or around 8lb of fat. "If you want to put that into activity levels," Dr Buckley says, "then that would be the equivalent of running about 10 marathons a year. Just by standing up three or four hours in your day at work." The New York Times published an informative article Taking a Stand for Office Ergonomics and wrote, "The science is still evolving, but we believe that sitting is harmful in itself,” says Dr. Toni Yancey, a professor of health services at the University of California, Los Angeles. Yet many of us still spend long hours each day sitting in front of a computer... If there is a movement toward ergonomic diversity and upright work in the information age, it will also be a return to the past. Today, the diligent worker tends to be defined as a person who puts in long hours crouched in front of a screen. But in the 19th and early 20th centuries, office workers, like clerks, accountants and managers, mostly stood. Sitting was slacking. And if you stand at work today, you join a distinguished lineage — Leonardo da Vinci, Ben Franklin, Winston Churchill, Vladimir Nabokov and, according to a recent profile in The New York Times, Philip Roth."
